What Is a Saddle-Stitched Booklet?
Saddle stitching is one of the most popular and economical methods for producing booklets. Printed sheets are folded together and secured along the center fold with staples, creating a clean and professional booklet that opens easily and lies relatively flat.
Because saddle-stitched booklets are created from folded sheets, the total page count is typically produced in increments of four. For example, common page counts include 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, and 28 pages.
Self Cover vs. Separate Cover
A self-cover booklet uses the same paper stock for the cover and inside pages. This is a great choice for economical programs, brochures, and informational booklets.
A separate-cover booklet uses a heavier stock for the outside cover while the inside pages are printed on a lighter text stock. This creates a more substantial, premium presentation and is ideal for catalogs, corporate booklets, memorial programs, and presentation materials.
Artwork & File Setup
For the best print quality, we recommend submitting a print-ready PDF whenever possible. Your booklet artwork should include the correct finished size, page count, bleed, and safe margins.
- Recommended File Type: Print-ready PDF
- Resolution: 300 DPI recommended for images
- Color Mode: CMYK recommended
- Bleed: Extend backgrounds and images beyond the trim edge when required
- Safe Zone: Keep important text and logos safely inside the trim area
- Page Order: Submit pages in normal reading order unless otherwise instructed
Please do not manually arrange booklet pages into printer spreads unless specifically requested. In most cases, your artwork should be supplied as individual pages in normal reading order.

How to Submit Your Booklet Pages
Please submit your booklet as individual pages in normal reading order, beginning with the front cover and ending with the back cover.
Do not manually arrange your pages into printer spreads or booklet imposition unless specifically requested by our production team. We will handle the proper page arrangement for printing and binding.
For example, a 12-page booklet PDF should contain 12 individual pages in this order:
Front Cover → Page 2 → Page 3 → Page 4 → Page 5 → Page 6 → Page 7 → Page 8 → Page 9 → Page 10 → Page 11 → Back Cover
Important Page Count Information
Saddle-stitched booklets are produced using folded sheets, so the total page count must typically be in increments of four.
Common page counts include:
8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44, and 48 pages.
The front cover, inside front cover, inside back cover, and back cover are included in the total page count.
Bleed & Safe Area
If your design contains backgrounds, photographs, or graphics that print all the way to the edge, extend those elements beyond the finished trim size to create proper bleed.
Keep important text, logos, page numbers, and other critical content away from the trim and binding areas to prevent anything important from being cut off or positioned too close to the edge.
Uploading Multiple Files
Whenever possible, combine all booklet pages into one multi-page PDF before uploading.
If your artwork must be submitted as multiple files, clearly name each file so our production team can identify the correct page order.
Example:
01-Front-Cover.pdf, 02-Page-2.pdf, 03-Page-3.pdf, 12-Back-Cover.pdf
Before You Upload
- Confirm that you selected the correct booklet size and page count.
- Check spelling, phone numbers, addresses, dates, prices, and contact information.
- Make sure all pages are included and arranged in the correct reading order.
- Verify that images are high resolution.
- Make sure important content is safely inside the trim area.
- Confirm that fonts and graphics display correctly in your final PDF.
